GA Dept. of Driver Services
What Digital Licenses Mean for GA Convenience Stores

By Shevondah M. Leslie, MPA
The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) has reached a major digital milestone: more than 500,000 Georgians now have a digital driver’s license or ID stored in their smartphone’s digital wallet. Since the program launched in May 2023, adoption has grown quickly, signaling strong consumer interest in mobile identity solutions.  For convenience store operators, this is not just a trend worth watching closely, it is one to be a part of!
Why Retailers Should Care
The Georgia Digital License and ID offers stronger age verification, which can result in reduced risk.  It provides accurate real-time verification that helps prevent sales to underage customers. Digital IDs are also harder to fake.  Built in security features such as the customer’s use of biometrics to access the digital credential makes it more secure.  Consumer behavior is shifting just as mobile payments moved from novelty to everyday use, digital IDs are following the same path. Younger customers, in particular, are eager to store everything (credit cards, boarding passes, and now their driver’s license) in their phones.

“Digital IDs improve convenience, security, and privacy. For retailers, that means stronger protection against fake IDs, faster verification, and less friction at the register,” said DDS Commissioner Angelique B. McClendon.

While convenience stores still may request physical IDs, preparing for digital ID acceptance could put your business ahead of the curve. As regulations and technology evolve, stores equipped to recognize and verify digital IDs may gain an edge in customer trust and speed of service.

Half a million Georgians adopting digital IDs in just over a year is a strong indicator of where the market is headed. While physical IDs remain, the convenience store industry should prepare for the near future where checking IDs may mean tapping a phone instead of holding a plastic card.

Since this article was submitted, Bailey Love Woodall and Angela Holland, CAE, attended the first DDS-hosted Digital Identification Session.  We learned a tremendous amount of information, including that although this can be an option, most retailers will require an additional piece of POS equipment to verify the mobile driver's license.  Keep this in mind as you upgrade your systems and add new locations.* "
