In Our Backyard
Making a Difference in C-Stores

The Georgia Association of Convenience Stores (GACS) remains a proud supporter of In Our Backyard, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to combating human trafficking through education, outreach, and frontline action.

During this year’s annual convention, GACS welcomed Cheryl Csiky, Executive Director of In Our Backyard, to speak about the organization’s mission. A survivor of child trafficking, Cheryl has led efforts across the nation, partnering with law enforcement, training advocates, and mentoring survivors. Her leadership and courage have inspired both policy change and personal transformation in communities across the country.
Since 2018, GACS has partnered with In Our Backyard to raise awareness and train employees across the state, empowering convenience store teams to recognize and report signs of trafficking. This effort began with GACS Young Professionals and quickly grew into a statewide movement that has seen hundreds of members step up.

​One of the most significant efforts came in early 2019, just before the Super Bowl in Atlanta. More than 400 volunteers, including GACS members and industry partners, hit the streets to distribute Missing Children’s Booklets, educate store employees, and place Freedom Stickers in restroom stalls. Weeks later, the results were clear: 29 of the 34 children featured in the materials had been safely recovered, an 84% recovery rate.
GACS members have continued their support by:
  • Volunteering at major sporting event command centers
  • Training store employees on trafficking recognition
  • Posting Freedom Stickers in store restrooms statewide
  • Donating time, funds, and resources to ongoing recovery efforts
