Shadow Toward the Sun One warm April night in 1974, my whole college experience—and life, for that matter—seemed to telescope down into one dramatic evening. After a night of seemingly unrelated strange events, I found myself lying down in the rubble of what had been the main building on campus, Henderson Hall. Old Henderson had burned to the ground that previous January, leaving blackened bricks and large shards of wood and glass where it had once stood since the early 1900s. Looking up from the ruins, there seemed to be a hole in the sky, right above me, with stars all around, as if the ruins where I lay were the center of the universe. As I pondered what my immediate and distant future would be (graduation was less than a month away), a glint of light shone on a broken window in the rubble. It was the reflection of an errant ray of the rising sun, coming up over a distant hill. I went back to my apartment and started writing this song. As for turning one's shadow toward the sun...it's wishful thinking. |
